Narrative
My doctoral research examines the use of Style I Germanic animal art as a medium for the expression of individual and group identities in fifth and sixth century northern Europe. By studying the iconography of this style in conjunction with related grave goods and burials, I aim to discover which aspects of identity, such as gender and age grade, were significant to early medieval peoples and to examine how these identities were expressed through artifacts and art in funerary contexts.
