Narrative

Bronze (and occasionally iron) mirrors are commonly found in elite burials and other ritual contexts across temperate Eurasia from the 2nd millennium BC through the 1st millennium AD.  Despite regional and temporal differences across this vast region, it is significant that mirrors were so often selected for ritual purposes, that they were exchanged over thousands of kilometers and sometimes curated for centuries—but why?  My dissertation examines mirrors in Iron Age temperate Eurasia, viz. their symbolic and ritual meanings, and their role in culture contact and communication.
